What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. Your doctor injects a chemical solution known as a sclerosant into your vein. 

When the sclerosant is inside your vein, it irritates the lining of the vein. This makes the walls of the vein swell and stick together, closing off the faulty vein. Then over time, your body absorbs the blood, and the vein turns into scar tissue, which is absorbed back into your body.

What happens during sclerotherapy?

While you lie on your back with your legs elevated, your doctor uses a small needle to inject the sclerosant into your veins. You may feel a slight pinch from the needle and a tingling sensation from the solution. After your injections, your doctor massages the treated veins to help them close and seal.

Most patients need a series of treatments to get rid of all their varicose veins completely. While sclerotherapy is very effective, everyone reacts differently. 

How should I take care of my legs following sclerotherapy?

After your treatment, you’ll need to wear compression stockings to help your treated veins stay closed and to support efficient circulation. Your doctor gives you personalized instructions on how long to wear the stockings, as well as advice on what to expect from the treatment.
